"[anti]thesis" is a choreographic work by Elana Goodman that explores the duality of double consciousness experienced by Black Americans. Through the medium of movement & dance, this work demonstrates the tension between internal identity and external perceptions. The performance uses the juxtaposition of music/soundscape and laughter, including religious operatic pieces and a metronome, to symbolize the struggle for freedom amid rigidity, while abstract nods to the Vaudeville period highlight the historical and ongoing oppression in entertainment. This work attempts to engage the audience in reflection on how Black bodies are perceived through the white gaze. "[anti]thesis" challenges viewers to reflect on the pervasive impact of racism and calls for empathy, understanding, and change.
